70 Bands, 20 Porches, One Sunday: Carmel PorchFest Returns September 20

This is our second year going to Carmel PorchFest, and I'll say it plainly: if you love live music, this is the single best day on the Midtown calendar. Not the biggest, not the flashiest — the best. It's free, it's outdoors, it's six hours long, and it happens entirely on the front porches of the neighborhood a few steps north of Main Street.

Sunday, September 20 — Noon to 6 p.m.

PorchFest runs noon to 6 p.m. this Sunday in the Arts & Design District, and admission is free. Streets in the festival grid close early that morning, so plan to park on the edges and walk in. Thirteen Years of This

PorchFest isn't new. Carmel PorchFest hit its 10-year mark in 2023, which makes 2026 the thirteenth run. It has grown every year: 57 acts on 21 porches in 2023, 62 bands last year, and roughly 70 acts across more than 20 porches this Sunday. Somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 people come through over the course of the afternoon.

It's also a nonprofit with a real purpose. Carmel PorchFest, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) that runs the CPF Grant Program, awarding money to local students pursuing music, with the grant presented on stage during the festival. The same group puts on the Late Night on Main street concerts every summer.

The Neighborhood Is the Venue

This is what makes it work. The whole thing fits inside a roughly three-by-four-block grid just north of Main Street — walkable end to end in about ten minutes. Actual homeowners hand over their front porches, bands set up between the porch rails, and the lawn and sidewalk become the seating. Stand in the right spot and you can hear two bands at once.

Because it's right off Main Street, you're never far from the rest of Midtown. Park once, catch five hours of music, and walk to dinner without moving your car.

The Lineup Is the Point

Sets run about 45 minutes, and the genre spread is genuinely wide — rock, pop, jazz, blues, country, and a good amount that doesn't file neatly into any of those. That's the whole strategy: you wander, you stumble into a band you'd never have bought a ticket for, and half the time that's the one you're still talking about on Monday.

Food and Beer Are Handled

You don't need to pack a lunch. Food vendors set up throughout the grid — past years have brought pizza, barbecue, and donuts — and local breweries and wineries pour for the 21-and-up crowd, with lemonade and juice for everyone else. There are community booths scattered around too.

How to Do It Right

Bring a chair. That's the one piece of advice everybody who has been will give you. Bring a chair, pick a porch, sit down for a full set, then get up and find the next one. Six hours goes faster than you think.
