I've lived in Carmel for a few years now, and I'll be honest — I didn't fully appreciate what was right in my backyard until I started spending more time wandering around Midtown and the Arts & Design District. Now I find myself down here almost every weekend, and I'm always running into neighbors who say they've never really explored it. So consider this my love letter to one of the best little pockets of Indiana.
Start at Midtown Plaza
If you haven't been to Midtown Plaza, stop whatever you're doing and go. It's the beating heart of this whole area — a lively outdoor space built on Carmel's old industrial land that somehow manages to feel both brand new and totally comfortable. There's a giant screen for watching games and movies, a grassy lawn, ping-pong tables, cornhole, and a pool table. It's the kind of place where you can show up alone and leave with new friends.
While you're there, grab a drink at Sun King Carmel — a craft brewery and distillery with rotating food vendors on-site. The vibe is relaxed and social, and the local brews are genuinely excellent. If you're more of a coffee person, Java House is right in the mix too, and it's become my go-to morning spot before I walk the Monon Trail.
Wander into the Arts & Design District
From Midtown, it's an easy stroll into the Carmel Arts & Design District — one of Indiana's officially designated arts districts and honestly one of the most charming streets I've ever walked. Main Street here is lined with flower baskets, al fresco dining patios, and an eclectic mix of galleries and shops that you genuinely won't find anywhere else in the suburbs.
The art scene here is real. Galleries like Art on Main, Indiana Artisan, and the Circle Contemporary Art Gallery rotate exhibits regularly, so there's always something new. And if you have kids, don't miss the Carmel Arts Council Children's Art Gallery — it holds an actual Guinness World Record as the world's smallest children's art gallery, which is exactly as delightful as it sounds.
The Indiana Design Center is worth a peek even if you're not redecorating — it's the Midwest's premier design facility and home to dozens of showrooms. Walking through it feels like flipping through a really good design magazine.
Eat, Drink, and Treat Yourself
Okay, this is where I could go on forever. The food and drink scene down here is serious. Bub's Burgers & Ice Cream is a Carmel institution — the burgers are massive and unapologetic, and their house-made ice cream is the kind of thing you think about on a Tuesday afternoon. Bazbeaux has some of the best pizza in the state, full stop. And if you're in the mood for something more elevated, Anthony's Chophouse is the place — it's upscale without being stuffy.
For something lighter, The Cake Bake Shop is a magical experience — the décor alone is worth the visit, and the pastries and cakes are absolutely stunning. There's also Fork + Ale House over in Midtown if you want a great neighborhood bar with solid food.
And don't sleep on Penn & Beech Candle Company for a unique shopping stop — one of those local gems that makes great gifts and smells incredible the moment you walk in.
The Monon Makes It All Connected
One of my favorite things about this area is how accessible it is on foot or bike. The Monon Trail runs right through, and you can even rent bikes at the corner of Main Street and the Monon. There's no better way to spend a summer evening than biking through the district, stopping wherever looks good, and ending up at a patio somewhere.
If you're a Carmel resident and you haven't fully explored Midtown and the Arts District yet, make this the summer you do. Bring a friend, bring your kids, bring your appetite — this neighborhood has something for everyone, and it just keeps getting better.
